I love the idea of the DGT Board and Clocks recording games for downloading later to a computer. Those are especially useful when making and editing chess videos. It's swanky to have a 2d chess board overlay for a chess game video. As a result, it's easier to follow a game. I also like when chess video creators include the position Evaluation Bar in their overlay.
Yet, I also love the appearance and ethos of roll-up vinyl chess boards, peculiarly the green and white ones. They are a seemingly ubiquitous prop for park or café chess hustler culture. I want to start creating videos using a chess hustler theme and tone. I think a roll-up vinyl board would help make that look. You might disagree with that; okay, but that's my subjective assessment.
So, I've been looking for roll-up vinyl DGT Like Chess Smart-Board. So naturally, I was pretty perturbed when I couldn't find one. And, unfortunately, there doesn't appear that any such commercial board like that exists. But, on the other hand, I'd think it incredibly easy to build one, maybe even more accessible than making a nice wooden one.
Being a DIY kind of guy, I now have decided to start a project to make a vinyl roll-up Chess SmartBoard. I also want to goat my chess enthusiast son, an engineering student at Texas A&M, to do the project with me. A father-son bonding experience along the lines of rebuilding a 1933 Ford Model 46 (V-8) half-ton pickup truck out in the old hay barn.
I can find several similar projects, but they don't have any sensory technology - you have to enter the moves manually - that doesn't work.
It should be easy enough. Buy two vinyl roll-up chess mats. Slap some open-source sensor technology between the two mats and fuse them. Plug it into a DGT Pi or, better yet, a DIY chess computer.
Any ideas on opinions on design or technical specs or construction methods or open-source sensor technology?
