I got on a streak for a day and got my rating up till 1800s, I then get to play a bunch of really high ranked 1900 players and I see them making quite silly mistakes. Something that you really don't see playing players around my regular 1700s rank and I found myself beating them and quickly moving even further up.
I really don't think I improved at all. I'm still making my own mistakes and can still get destroyed by anyone knowing what he is doing. I really got a feeling that some very highly ranked players aren't much better than my usual opponents around 1700 rating and even lower.
Could it be that its rating range the thing that skews actual skill level? Playing lower level, you don't even see other games, you get occasional high level match that you lose, but I guess the most of them like to play between themselves and doing that keep their rating unrealistically high.
Ok, now we all know how cool are you, so cool that you can crush 1900 rated players like ez. Bravo!
But well, I'm bored enough to tell you some cool story. So listen. When I just registered at lichess I barely made it to 1500 (that was in old times when you started with 1200 ELO). Also I got 1500 only cos I played slower games against 1300 - 1400 players. It was extremely hard to win against someone higher than 1500, also I was still able to lose even against 1200 rated players. But I didnt gave up and started to work on my game, whenever I had some free time. Every weekend I was solving tactical puzzles, playing long games against stronger opponents and stuff like that. Sometimes I was about to stop playing chess cos I didnt saw any improvement. But little by little my game become a bit stronger. And only than I was able to win against higher rated players. Nowadays my game is still very far from perfect, and I dont have much time to improve my skills. But I can tell you for sure : if Me of today was playing against me of about 6 - 12 month ago, I would crushed old me with closed eyes.
You won against some higher rated players, very good. Maybe you had a good day, and they had a bad day. Maybe you improved enough to bit them, who knows. But talking about rating: its not perfect, but still descent measure of your playing strength.
This is online chess the connection in my opinion is also responsible. Today my connection always 'reconnecting' it affected my games badly. And perhaps some people only very good at certain blitz game like 1 ,2 or 3 min but Lichess only have one rating.
lol what are you ranting about? I'm not bragging or anything, if anyone is, it's you. I only said I don't think I'm any better and that players around 1800 aren't any better than the rest. I got on a lucky streak that pushed me over 1700 wall where I belong and noticed somewhat lower skill than expected. And I never said rating system is broken or anything.
It's just my honest observation. As for reason for it, again my own opinion, players playing with rating range.
Was I ranting or bragging? Absolutely no. All that I said is just my observations as well. Also according to my observations you definitely missing both humility and respect.
