Why do most people play chess and why?

It's not that simple, one could say that you're not explaining hiding behind the concept of 'fun', of course it's fun but why it is fun? That is the question.

how versus why. This could be true of any motivating or cherished activity being practiced repeatedly (without being forced to...).

Although I also get eurekas when I lose unexpectedly or miss a counterpoint that the opponenent might make in a combination. or realize that my assumptions need revision (often how I evaluate my odds given a position).

I think those eurekas are equivalent to the checkmate tension relaxation for others.
Fun to play, healthy for the brain. I like patterns of things.
Online Chess adds fire to thousands of casual chess players. I get a chance to play strong players without joining otb tournaments. Casual chess is not fun when you always lose or always wins with limited opponents.
I play chess so that I can finally have smthng to beat my friends in. Then I say that they could use some practice

1.3 % where? the whole planet 1.3%? or where it is played as a tradition (not obligatory, but present). Could we map the world chess demographics (estimates) (I am not talking rated chess necessarily, just like hobby). Possibly chess variants or neighbors if dominant.
