The rating went up from 1167 to 1403 in a single tournament. The Tournament performance rating was 1794!
You are right about Fabiano Caruana. He won 2014 Sinquefeild Cup very convincingly. Right now he is very weak his game with Sergey Karjakin in the latest Candidates Tournament proves that.
Or Anand.. he was World Champion for a very long time and he is now out of top 10 for awhile. Same goes for Topalov. He played really badly in the latest Candidates Tournament.

Yes. Studying master games really helps. I find it helps especially in the openings to get a better sense of the general breakthroughs and thematic maneuvers.
Actually, the only coach I have is in a group setting. (10+ people)
